This trend might come as a shock to some – yes, the cupcake is on its way out. I’ll be honest, I’m not sad to see the cupcake go. I was married nine years ago when statement cakes were still popular. We went big on the cake – a four tier cake that Buttercream Cakes carved a frosting waterfall into.
Statement wedding cakes initially lost trendiness due to cost. Cupcakes were just less expensive. Nowadays, that has changed. As cupcakes got more popular, they got more expensive. Depending on the bakery you may still save some money by going with cupcakes, but you should no longer expect a huge cost savings.
If you are looking to impress your guests, a statement cake is the way to go. I have seen several large cakes in the last year and guests remark how fun it is to have cake instead of cupcakes.
Personally, I like the shift away from cupcakes. We have some super talented cake designers in the Northland (let’s connect if you need a recommendation), so this is a trend that I hope sticks around. Don’t worry – if you don’t like cupcakes, there are a couple other dessert trends that I hope stick around. I’ll do a post on those in a few months. If you want an immediate recommendation, shoot me an email.
Pro Tip: Ask your venue or caterer what their cake cutting fee is. This is a fee that you cannot avoid. Please do not ask Aunt Sally to cut the cake! Large wedding cakes often come with a map for how they need to be cut and it takes some practice to cut pretty pieces of cake.
