Wedding Tip Wednesday – Value Your Time
Wedding Tips from a Wedding Planner in Duluth, Minnesota
Hello DIY Brides! My name is Mary Carlson and I am the owner + lead planner at Pure Event Planning & Design. We are a wedding planning company located in Duluth, Minnesota. This is Wedding Tip Wednesday where every week I provide a wedding tip in hopefully two minutes or less. This video blog provides real wedding planning tips from a real wedding planner in Minnesota.
Today, I am going to finish up our two week series on do it yourself brides. Last week, I had our DIY brides put together a list of items that you want to complete before your wedding. If you did not see last week’s blog, you can watch it here.
This week I want to continue talking about do it your self weddings, but specifically I want to talk about your time. Specifically, I want to discuss the value of your time. You see, sometimes it is not worth doing a project yourself. In certain cases, it is actually a better value to hire a professional to take care of certain tasks. I’m not talking about planning here – more I want you to think about this in terms of decorating.
What I want you to do is to take each item on your DIY wedding to-do list and give it an hourly estimate for how long it will take to complete each project. For example, if you decide you are going to do your floral centerpieces yourself, you might decide that will take eight hours of time. Then, I want you to figure out how much your time is worth on an hourly basis. For this figure, I recommend you use 80% of your hourly compensation at work. That means if you make $10 per hour, you should value your time at $8 per hour for DIY wedding projects. Next, you will take the number of hours you will estimate each project will take and multiply it by your hourly compensation. Whatever number you get is how much that DIY project will cost you in your time.
TIME IS MONEY!
Once you have that figure, I recommend you get a couple of quotes to see how much it will cost to have a professional to take that project off of your plate. This is really important because you might find it is worth hiring a professional to take care of some wedding projects for you. I’m not advocating you should not do any do it yourself projects (unless you do not want to). I love doing DIY tutorials and am a huge DIYer myself. You just want to know how much your time is worth on those projects.
That is today’s Wedding Tip Wednesday – make sure you are valuing your time on your do it yourself wedding projects. I love the DIY bride, please do not get me wrong! If you are a DIY bride, I fully support you! I just want to make sure planning is really enjoyable for you.
